Your First Orthodontic Consultation
Know exactly what to expect at your initial orthodontist visit. We'll walk you through the entire process so you can arrive prepared and confident.
What Happens at Your First Orthodontist Visit?
Your initial consultation is the first step toward your new smile. This appointment is designed to give you a complete understanding of your orthodontic needs and treatment options—with no pressure or obligation.
At Curve Orthodontics, we take a thorough, unhurried approach to consultations. Our goal is to answer all your questions, explain your options clearly, and help you make an informed decision about your treatment.
Most first consultations take 45-60 minutes. Here's exactly what you can expect during your visit.
Your Consultation Step-by-Step
Welcome and Medical History
Upon arrival, we'll review your medical and dental history. We'll ask about any previous dental work, current concerns, and what you hope to achieve with orthodontic treatment.
Clinical Examination
Dr. Garima will examine your teeth, bite, jaw alignment, and facial structure. This hands-on assessment helps identify the specific issues that need to be addressed.
Digital Records
We'll take digital photographs, X-rays (if needed), and 3D scans of your teeth. These records are essential for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
Diagnosis Discussion
Using your records, we'll explain what's happening with your teeth and bite. You'll see your 3D scan on screen and understand exactly what needs to be corrected.
Treatment Options
We'll present your treatment options—whether braces, aligners, or other appliances—explaining the pros and cons of each approach for your specific case. You'll receive a clear timeline and cost estimate for each option.
What We Assess During Your Consultation
Tooth Alignment
We evaluate crowding, spacing, rotations, and the overall position of your teeth to determine the scope of movement needed.
Bite Relationship
How your upper and lower teeth meet is crucial. We check for overbites, underbites, crossbites, and open bites.
Jaw Position
The position and relationship of your upper and lower jaws affects both function and aesthetics.
Facial Profile
We consider how tooth and jaw positions relate to your overall facial aesthetics and harmony.
Oral Health Status
We check for cavities, gum health, and any dental issues that should be addressed before orthodontic treatment begins.
Growth Patterns
For younger patients, we assess growth and development to determine the optimal timing for treatment.
How to Prepare for Your Consultation
A little preparation helps us make the most of your consultation time.
What to Bring:
- Any previous dental X-rays or records (if available)
- List of current medications
- Dental insurance information (if applicable)
- List of questions you want to ask
- A parent or guardian (for patients under 18)
Before Your Visit:
- Brush and floss your teeth before arriving
- Eat normally—there are no restrictions before a consultation
- Arrive a few minutes early to complete any paperwork
Good Questions to Ask:
- What specific issues need to be corrected?
- What treatment options are available for my case?
- How long will treatment take?
- What is the total cost, and are payment plans available?
- How often will I need appointments?
- What happens if I don't get treatment?
Consultation Questions
Is there a fee for the initial consultation?
Please contact us for current consultation fees. The consultation includes a comprehensive examination, digital records, diagnosis discussion, and detailed treatment options with pricing—everything you need to make an informed decision.
Do I need a referral from my dentist?
No referral is necessary. You can book a consultation directly with us. However, if your dentist has recommended orthodontic treatment, feel free to bring any records or notes they've provided.
Can I start treatment on the same day as my consultation?
In some cases, yes. If your diagnostic records are complete and you're ready to proceed, we can sometimes begin treatment the same day. However, most patients prefer to take time to consider their options before starting.
What if I'm not sure I want treatment?
That's completely fine. The consultation is meant to give you information, not pressure you into a decision. Take all the time you need. If you decide to proceed later, your records remain on file.
Can I bring someone with me to the consultation?
Absolutely. We encourage you to bring a family member, partner, or friend. Having someone else hear the information can be helpful, and they may think of questions you didn't consider.
How long is the consultation valid?
Your consultation records and treatment plan are typically valid for 6-12 months. After that, we may need to take new records as teeth can shift over time, potentially affecting the treatment plan.
