Living with Clear Aligners

Clear aligners offer a more flexible approach to orthodontic treatment. Unlike braces, aligners are removable, virtually invisible, and don't restrict what you can eat. However, this flexibility comes with responsibility—your success depends on wearing your aligners consistently.

This guide covers everything you need to know about daily life with aligners, from establishing good habits to handling common situations. With the right routine, aligner treatment can fit seamlessly into your lifestyle.

Your Daily Aligner Routine

1

Wake Up: Aligners Stay In

Start your day with aligners in. If you've removed them overnight (which you shouldn't), put them back in immediately. Aligners need to be worn 20-22 hours daily for treatment to progress on schedule.

2

Meals: Remove, Eat, Clean, Replace

Remove aligners before eating or drinking anything except plain water. Store them in your case—never wrap in napkin or tissue. Eat normally, then brush and floss before reinserting aligners.

3

Clean Aligners: Morning and Night

Rinse aligners every time you remove them. Clean thoroughly at least twice daily with a soft toothbrush and clear liquid soap or aligner cleaning crystals. Avoid hot water—it can warp the plastic.

4

Track Your Wear Time

Use a timer app or keep mental track of your aligner-out time. Most people can eat and clean within 2-4 hours daily, leaving plenty of time for the required 20-22 hours of wear.

5

Change Aligners on Schedule

Switch to your next set of aligners as instructed—typically every 1-2 weeks. Change aligners at night so you sleep through any initial tightness. Keep your previous set as a backup.

Aligner Care Essentials

Always Use Your Case

When aligners are out, they go in the case—always. More aligners are lost wrapped in napkins than any other way. Keep your case with you everywhere.

Rinse Before Reinserting

Always rinse aligners before putting them back in your mouth. This removes bacteria that accumulated while they were out.

Avoid Hot Drinks

Never drink hot beverages with aligners in—heat warps the plastic. Remove aligners for hot coffee or tea, or wait until drinks cool to room temperature.

Skip the Mouthwash

Don't soak aligners in mouthwash. The alcohol and coloring agents can cloud, stain, or damage the plastic. Use clear, gentle cleaning solutions instead.

Keep Them Clear

Only plain water while wearing aligners. Coffee, tea, wine, and colored drinks can stain both aligners and your teeth. Sugary drinks promote decay.

Handle with Care

When removing aligners, start from the back and work forward. Don't yank from the front—this can crack the plastic. Use both hands for even removal.

Aligners in Daily Life

Travel Tips

  • Pack your aligner case, cleaning supplies, and your next set of aligners
  • Carry a small travel toothbrush and toothpaste
  • If crossing time zones, continue changing aligners based on days elapsed, not clock time
  • Keep aligners in your carry-on, not checked luggage

Social Situations

  • It's fine to remove aligners for a meal out—just stay within your daily removal time
  • For events where you'll be eating over extended periods (weddings, parties), plan ahead
  • Most people won't notice your aligners unless you point them out
  • Speaking may feel slightly different initially—practice reading aloud to adjust faster

At Work or School

  • Keep a spare aligner case at your desk
  • Store a toothbrush and toothpaste in your bag or desk drawer
  • Find a private moment to remove/reinsert if you prefer—restrooms work well
  • Pack lunches that are easy to eat quickly to maximize wear time

Common Challenges and Solutions

Tight New Aligners

It's normal for new aligners to feel tight—this is the pressure moving your teeth. Change aligners at night to sleep through initial tightness. Use chewies to ensure proper seating.

Speech Changes

Slight lisping is common initially. Read aloud or practice speaking to adapt faster. Most patients speak normally within a few days of starting treatment.

Dry Mouth

Aligners can reduce saliva flow. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. If dry mouth persists, consider a saliva-stimulating mouthwash.

Lost or Damaged Aligner

If you lose or damage an aligner, wear your previous set and contact us immediately. Don't skip ahead to your next set without consulting us first.

Aligner Questions

What happens if I don't wear aligners 20-22 hours daily?

Inconsistent wear is the most common reason for treatment delays or poor results. Your teeth only move when aligners are in. If you wear aligners less than recommended, your teeth may not move enough to fit the next set, requiring backtracking or new aligners.

Can I chew gum with aligners in?

No. Gum sticks to aligners and is very difficult to remove. If you want to freshen breath, use sugar-free mints that dissolve quickly, or simply remove aligners briefly to chew gum.

My aligners are stained. What should I do?

Light staining is common and cosmetic. For cleaning, soak aligners in a half water, half hydrogen peroxide solution for 30 minutes. Prevent staining by only drinking water while wearing aligners and cleaning them promptly after removal.

What if my aligner cracks?

Minor cracks along edges are usually okay to continue wearing. If the crack is significant or the aligner is uncomfortable, contact us. We may advise moving to your next set early or ordering a replacement.

Can I kiss with aligners in?

Yes—aligners are smooth and thin, and most partners don't even notice them. If you prefer, you can remove them for romantic moments, just don't leave them out too long.

Why are there bumps on my teeth (attachments)?

Attachments are small tooth-colored bumps bonded to certain teeth. They help aligners grip and rotate teeth more effectively. They're barely visible and are removed when treatment ends.

Can I exercise with aligners in?

Yes, keep aligners in during exercise. Stay hydrated with water. For contact sports, you may remove aligners and wear a regular mouthguard, but limit this time and reinsert promptly after.

How do I know if my aligners fit correctly?

Properly seated aligners fit snugly with no gaps between the aligner edge and your gum line. Use chewies (provided by us) to ensure aligners are fully seated. If aligners consistently don't fit properly, contact us.
